About this activity

This full-day tour (approx. 6 hours) covers three of the most photographed sites in the Sacred Valley: the weaving town of Chinchero, the circular agricultural laboratory of Moray, and the more than 3,000 salt pools of the Maras Salt Mines, fed by an underground spring since pre-Inca times. Pickup is approximately at 8:00 am and return to Cusco approximately at 2:00 pm.

It’s a trip designed for travelers who want to understand the relationship between the Incas and their environment: how they wove in Chinchero, how they experimented with crops at different altitudes and microclimates in Moray, and how they extracted salt from a salty spring since before the Inca empire.

Itinerary

Day 1

Chinchero, Moray and Maras Salt Mines

Pickup from your hotel in Cusco is approximately at 8:00 am. The first stop is Chinchero (3,762 masl, about 30 km from Cusco), a colonial town built on Inca foundations, known for its 17th century church and its traditional weaving workshops, where the full spinning and natural dyeing process is shown. Visit of about 45 minutes.

From Chinchero, the group continues to Moray, an Inca experimental agricultural center made up of terraced circular depressions up to 30 meters deep. The temperature difference of up to 15°C between the top and bottom terraces allowed the Incas to simulate different microclimates and test crops from other regions. Visit of about 45 minutes.

The last stop is the Maras Salt Mines: more than 3,000 salt pools terraced along a hillside, fed by an underground salt water spring active since pre-Inca times. Each pool produces salt in an evaporation cycle that takes several weeks. Visit of about 30 to 45 minutes.

The tour ends with the return to Cusco, arriving at your hotel at approximately 2:00 pm.
