About this activity

Qeswachaka is the last Inca suspension bridge built entirely from braided plant fiber, stretched across the Apurimac River 15 meters above the water and 28.67 meters long. This full-day tour visits it as part of a lightly traveled route through the Southern Valley of Cusco, with stops at Andean lake viewpoints. Departure is at approximately 4:30 am, with return to Cusco in the afternoon.

Unlike the better-known Sacred Valley circuits, this route travels through the Southern Valley of Cusco toward the Apurimac River, where one of the last living examples of Inca plant-fiber engineering survives: the Qeswachaka bridge, once part of the extensive Qhapaq Ñan road network (the Inca Royal Road).

It’s a lesser-known route, ideal for travelers who have already seen Cusco’s most visited sites and are looking for something different.

Itinerary

Day 1

Cusco, Combapata, Qeswachaka Bridge and Lake Viewpoints

Pickup from your hotel in Cusco is at approximately 4:30 am. The first leg of the trip is by private transport through the Southern Valley of Cusco to the town of Combapata, where breakfast is served.

From Combapata, the route continues into Canas province, heading toward the Apurimac River, until reaching the Qeswachaka bridge. This suspension bridge, rebuilt by hand every year from plant fiber (ichu) by local communities following the original Inca technique, is 28.67 meters long and hangs 15 meters above the river. It's one of the last living examples of Qhapaq Ñan road engineering. Visit of about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

After visiting the bridge, the group returns to Combapata for lunch. A short digestive walk leads to the viewpoints over Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia and Pomacanchi lakes, a chain of high Andean lakes in Acomayo province.

The tour ends with the return to Cusco in the afternoon.
