About this activity

Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, is one of the most sought-after alternative hikes near Cusco. The full-day tour departs very early (pickup from 4:00 to 4:30 am), includes a hike of about 1 hour and 30 minutes to the viewpoint at 5,080 m altitude, and returns to Cusco in the afternoon, between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

Vinicunca gets its name from the mineral stripes that give the mountain its characteristic multicolor pattern, visible after years of erosion and melting ice. It’s one of the most photographed routes in the Cusco region, and a one-day alternative for travelers who don’t have time for a multi-day trek.

The difficulty is moderate: altitude is the main factor to consider, not distance. We work with bilingual guides and an emergency oxygen tank on every departure.

Itinerary

Day 1

Cusco, Cusipata, Llaqto and Vinicunca

Pickup from your hotel in Cusco is between 4:00 and 4:30 am. The first leg of the trip is by private transport heading south, to Cusipata (Paucarpata, 3,310 masl), about 2 hours from Cusco, where breakfast is served.

From Cusipata, the vehicle continues to Llaqto, the starting point of the hike. The climb to the Vinicunca viewpoint takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, with a total round trip of about 6 km. The gradient isn't steep, but the altitude (above 4,900 masl for most of the trail) makes the effort feel harder than expected.

At the viewpoint (5,080 masl) there's free time for photos and to take in the mineral stripes that give the mountain its name, before starting the descent along the same trail, taking a similar amount of time as the climb.

Back in Cusipata, a buffet lunch is served, and the return to Cusco takes about 2 more hours, arriving at your hotel between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.
